Trajectories

large scale painting in acrylic, oil, pastel, charcoal, graphite

Mountford’s latest body of work sees him place large scale canvases in site specific locations around the Mojave desert, he then traces the environment using bodies, his and his partners, via movement, the earth from the sites, charcoal, graphite and pastels.

The canvases are then taken back to his studio where they are stretched and painted, the process uncovers complex layers and textures, often allowing fugitive forms to unearth themselves even for fleeting moments before they return to the chaos and physicality of improvised mark making.

His belief is that the energy found in these ancient geological sites completes the synergy of bodies in movement. Allowing the earth itself to permeate the canvases is the final act of these performance based paintings he has titled Trajectories.
